It’s the healthcare industry so there is reason to speculate on anything CURE related. But hopeful Volunteers are currently enrolling for a clinical trial to find out if the promising tuberculosis vaccine, BCG, can also double as a cure for Type 1 diabetes. The trial, which is to take place at Boston’s Massachusetts General Hospital, is to determine whether BCG can destroy abnormal white blood cells that impede the production of insulin, which prevents diabetes.
Before the apprehensive thoughts of a miracle cure and flashbacks to “I Am Legend” start popping up in your mind, like mine, there are some promising aspects of this trial. Mice, who share similar blood to us humans, were tested with BCG over a span of four years and experienced noticeable improvements within days of treatment, along with eventual complete recovery from diabetes for a third of the subjects tested. BCG is also a proven drug whose effects for human safety have been documented for 80 years.
This clinical trial is worth keeping an eye on, in the meantime, let’s also look into preventative measures to insure a diabetes free lifestyle.
