We recently received an email from a member regarding Chantix, a new drug to help smokers quit. The member is in quite the predicament:
"I am currently taking Chantix in order to quit smoking as my doctor advised, but it is getting harder since this medication is so expensive… and cigarettes are cheaper!"
We did a little math to see if in fact quitting smoking by taking Chantix could actually be more expensive than smoking itself… which doesn’t really set smokers up for success in kicking their habit, to say the least!
Cost to Stop Smoking by using Chantix (based on Drugstore.com):
Weekly Cost: $26.75
Monthly Cost: $106.99
Total typical treatment (12 Weeks) $320.97.
Total Extended Treatment Cost (24 Weeks): $641.94 (In some cases a physician may prescribe an additional 12 weeks)
Cost to Continue Smoking (cigarettes based on a one pack per day smoker at $5 per pack):
Weekly Cost: $35
Monthly Cost: $140.00
12 Week Cost: $420
Yearly Cost: $1,680
So, the good news is that for the average smoker, Chantix will cost slightly less per week than smoking and substantially less over a year than smoking. And the better news is that there are likely other lower-cost drugs out there to help smokers quit.

There are so many benefits to quitting smoking! You will not only feel better but you will save money in the long run! Just imagine, in the example above, if you quit smoking, you could save over $1600 a year! To put it into perspective, that could be 6 Dooney & Bourke handbags or almost enough for season tickets for 2 to the Chicago Bears! Not to mention, you will breathe better, live longer, and have fresher breath.
Chantix is the newest medication available to help you quit smoking. The retail cost of Chantix is about 40% less expensive than Zyban and similar in price to bupropion SR (the generic form of Zyban). In several clinical studies comparing Chantix to bupropion SR, Chantix was shown to be more effective. In addition to these medicines, there are numerous nicotine replacement therapies to help you quit. Also,if you don’t have one already, sign up for a support group. This can be done in person, with your healthplan, or online. When attempting to quit smoking, get all the help you can. You don't ever have to do it alone!
